Province - Guanacaste
The province of Guanacaste is located in the north western part of Costa Rica, along the coast of the Pacific Ocean and for this reason is sometimes referred to as the North Pacific region of Costa Rica. The capital of Guanacaste, Liberia, is home to the countries second International Airport, Daniel Oduber International Airport, with arriving daily flights from all over the world.
The province is named after the Guanacaste tree which is also the national tree of Costa Rica. Guanacaste contains the 11 cantons, Abangares, Bagaces, Canas, Carrillo, Hojancha, La Cruz, Liberia, Nandayure, Nicoya, Santa Cruz and Tilaran. Although the canton of Nicoya is part of Guanacaste, a major part of the Nicoya Peninsula is under the control of the province of Puntarenas, this may change in the near future as there is current debate on this.
The province of Guanacaste has stunning shoreline and beaches, with top class surfing and snorkelling. Visitors to this province can also enjoy incredible bird watching, horse riding, windsurfing on mountain lakes and hiking through the mountain ranges of Cordillera de Tilaran and Cordillera de Guanacaste. Hiking the jungle trails in this area provide the opportunity to encounter many rare and endangered species of animals and birds including jaguars and tapirs, the dense forests also contain exotic trees and plantlife.
This dry and hot province features the so called beautiful "Gold Coast" a paradise for sport-fishermen and sun-lovers. It also features an active volcano, the Rincon de la Vieja, vast areas of cattle raising, sugar cane, and rice plantations.
